Modern Quilting, New Mexico Night Fire!

New Mexico Night Fire

Begun with Jacquie Gering during last Fall's workshop,
Helen so graciously brought in her just completed "New Mexico Night Fire".
Helen dyed the fabric and free-motion-quilted it herself.
(The only thing she didn't do was weave the fabric!)

Helen, thank you for bringing this piece of gloriousness in.
Your quilt inspired those of us who got to see it.
And it brought back memories of that friendly, lively and fun  weekend.

FKA

Future Knitters of America,
Hip Stitch Chapter

(They won't be FKA for very long!)

We feel so lucky to have the Sweater Girls teaching at Hip Stitch!  This Saturday  they began the first of a three part beginner class in the lounge. The peaceful, lively and often laughing conversation during their lesson  spilled out into the front of the store - and was a great soundtrack to our afternoon.

Sewing for Easter

Easter Bunny Shops at Hip Stitch

Mr. Bunny was especially fond of  these coffee cup cozies,  cool felted pincushion rings and our  sweet Moda jellyrolls and charm-packs.

Albuquerque Quilters

 The Secret Life of Quilters

My good friend Nicole and her dog Merlin lured me out of doors yesterday  for a morning stroll.
Not only did we find good coffee at a sweet, locally owned  spot, Michael Thomas Coffee (www.facebook.com/pages/Michael-Thomas-Coffee/88152998603), parked out front the coffee shop was  cool Sebastiano's Food Truck, manned by a chef who, besides having remodeled his airstream, just happens to be a self-taught QUILTER.

Angelo Tomarchio, Carpenter, Chef, Albuquerque Quilter

Angelo! Can we trade you a few fat quarters
for some of your awesome meatball sandwiches?

At the store, Young Albuquerque Quilter, Lily -  11 year old,  A-student, ballerina, Whovian and graduate of the 2012  Hip Stitch Summer Sewing Academy -  designed and made this colorful log cabin quilt as a  birthday gift.

This is Lily's 4th quilt in 8 months!

Have you seen any quilters lately?

Homecomings

How we love our fabric.
We search to find  perfect beautiful bolts. They arrive, we admire their pattern, their color, we wonder who will take them home and what they will become.  Filled with images of skilled friends and their work,  my camera's memory card has no room for more pictures.  Over the next few weeks, I'll be downloading pictures of our  fabric, our beloved friends and their resulting  collaborations.

Jane and orange turn into a swirl of skirt.

Pat and Matisse and Alexander Henry
crossed time, space and multi-media to create this quilted masterpiece. (And, by the way, Ms. Pat, did you make that cool sweater too?)

An early sign of approaching spring, two of my good hens, Boots and Harlan laid these eggs. The still-life photo features spring fabric from  Moda's "Lady's Stitching Club".  (OK,  the hens did not wittingly collaborate with me on this, nor do they know that I took a picture of their eggs. However, their efforts were recompensed handsomely.)

Spring Break 2013

A quick trip to Taos....and this is what happens when mom spends too much time in a fabric store:

But alas, they waited patiently, and even spent a bit of time with me IN the fabric store!  I picked up an awesome quilt pattern - when you stop in to Hip Stitch, ask me about it and I'll show it to you. It may even make a great block of the month!
